Creationists, why does evolution have many practical applications, while creationism has none whatsoever? Some examples: * Bioinformatics, a multi-billion-dollar industry, consists largely of the comparison of genetic sequences. Descent with modification is one of its most basic assumptions. * Diseases and pests evolve resistance to the drugs and pesticides we use against them. Evolutionary theory is used in the field of resistance management in both medicine and agriculture . * Evolutionary theory is used to manage fisheries for greater yields. * Artificial selection has been used since prehistory, but it has become much more efficient with the addition of quantitative trait locus mapping. * Knowledge of the evolution of parasite virulence in human populations can help guide public health policy. * Sex allocation theory, based on evolution theory, was used to predict conditions under which the highly endangered kakapo bird would produce more female offspring, which retrieved it from the brink of extinction. * Tracing genes of known function and comparing how they are related to unknown genes helps one to predict unknown gene function, which is foundational for drug discovery. * Phylogenetic analysis is a standard part of epidemiology, since it allows the identification of disease reservoirs and sometimes the tracking of step-by-step transmission of disease. For example, phylogenetic analysis confirmed that a Florida dentist was infecting his patients with HIV, that HIV-1 and HIV-2 were transmitted to humans from chimpanzees and mangabey monkeys in the twentieth century, and, when polio was being eradicated from the Americas, that new cases were not coming from hidden reservoirs. It was used in 2002 to help convict a man of intentionally infecting someone with HIV. The same principle can be used to trace the source of bioweapons. Ann, would you like to try answering the question? "Y!", better luck understanding the question next time.
Creationists, do you atleast acknowledge the benefits that the evolutionary theory has given us? Some examples... 1) Bioinformatics, a multi-billion-dollar industry, consists largely of the comparison of genetic sequences. Descent with modification is one of its most basic assumptions. 2) Diseases and pests evolve resistance to the drugs and pesticides we use against them. Evolutionary theory is used in the field of resistance management in both medicine and agriculture. 3) Evolutionary theory is used to manage fisheries for greater yields. 4) Artificial selection has been used since prehistory, but it has become much more efficient with the addition of quantitative trait locus mapping. 5) Knowledge of the evolution of parasite virulence in human populations can help guide public health policy. 6) Sex allocation theory, based on evolution theory, was used to predict conditions under which the highly endangered kakapo bird would produce more female offspring, which retrieved it from the brink of extinction. 7) Tracing genes of known function and comparing how they are related to unknown genes helps one to predict unknown gene function, which is foundational for drug discovery. 8) Phylogenetic analysis is a standard part of epidemiology, since it allows the identification of disease reservoirs and sometimes the tracking of step-by-step transmission of disease. 9) Phylogenetic analysis to track the diversity of a pathogen can be used to select an appropriate vaccine for a particular region. 10) Ribotyping is a technique for identifying an organism or at least finding its closest known relative by mapping its ribosomal RNA onto the tree of life. It can be used even when the organisms cannot be cultured or recognized by other methods. Ribotyping and other genotyping methods have been used to find previously unknown infectious agents of human disease. Anti-evolutionary ideas have been around for millennia and have not yet contributed anything with any practical application. Pastor Art~ Without the evolutionary theory, there would be no genetics. It is the framework tying together all of biology. Without the theory of evolution, it would still be possible to know much about biology, but not to understand it. Pastor Art~ Oh, and btw... Hitler was a Christian. Probably even a Creationist. "The undermining of the existence of human culture by the destruction of its bearer seems in the eyes of a folkish philosophy the most execrable crime. Anyone who dares to lay hands on the highest image of the Lord commits sacrilege against the benevolent Creator of this miracle and contributes to the expulsion from paradise." -Adolf Hitler, 1943 "Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord " -Adolf Hitler, 1943 Pastor Art~ Oh, and btw... Jesus said, you shall know the tree by its fruit.? Science, including the Theory of Evolution enabled great strides in human development. Evolutionary theory has been put to practical use in several areas (Futuyma 1995; Bull and Wichman 2001). For example: * Bioinformatics, a multi-billion-dollar industry, consists largely of the comparison of genetic sequences. Descent with modification is one of its most basic assumptions. * Diseases and pests evolve resistance to the drugs and pesticides we use against them. Evolutionary theory is used in the field of resistance management in both medicine and agriculture (Bull and Wichman 2001). * Evolutionary theory is used to manage fisheries for greater yields (Conover and Munch 2002). * Artificial selection has been used since prehistory, but it has become much more efficient with the addition of quantitative trait locus mapping. * Knowledge of the evolution of parasite virulence in human populations can help guide public health policy (Galvani 2003). * Sex allocation theory, based on evolution theory, was used to predict conditions under which the highly endangered kakapo bird would produce more female offspring, which retrieved it from the brink of extinction (Sutherland 2002). Phylogenetic analysis, which uses the evolutionary principle of common descent, has proven its usefulness: * Tracing genes of known function and comparing how they are related to unknown genes helps one to predict unknown gene function, which is foundational for drug discovery (Branca 2002; Eisen and Wu 2002; Searls 2003). * Phylogenetic analysis is a standard part of epidemiology, since it allows the identification of disease reservoirs and sometimes the tracking of step-by-step transmission of disease. For example, phylogenetic analysis confirmed that a Florida dentist was infecting his patients with HIV, that HIV-1 and HIV-2 were transmitted to humans from chimpanzees and mangabey monkeys in the twentieth century, and, when polio was being eradicated from the Americas, that new cases were not coming from hidden reservoirs (Bull and Wichman 2001). It was used in 2002 to help convict a man of intentionally infecting someone with HIV (Vogel 1998). The same principle can be used to trace the source of bioweapons (Cummings and Relman 2002). * Phylogenetic analysis to track the diversity of a pathogen can be used to select an appropriate vaccine for a particular region (Gaschen et al. 2002). * Ribotyping is a technique for identifying an organism or at least finding its closest known relative by mapping its ribosomal RNA onto the tree of life. It can be used even when the organisms cannot be cultured or recognized by other methods. Ribotyping and other genotyping methods have been used to find previously unknown infectious agents of human disease (Bull and Wichman 2001; Relman 1999). * Phylogenetic analysis helps in determining protein folds, since proteins diverging from a common ancestor tend to conserve their folds (Benner 2001). Directed evolution allows the "breeding" of molecules or molecular pathways to create or enhance products, including: * enzymes (Arnold 2001) * pigments (Arnold 2001) * antibiotics * flavors * biopolymers * bacterial strains to decompose hazardous materials. The evolutionary principles of natural selection, variation, and recombination are the basis for genetic algorithms, an engineering technique that has many practical applications, including aerospace engineering, architecture, astrophysics, data mining, drug discovery and design, electrical engineering, finance, geophysics, materials engineering, military strategy, pattern recognition, robotics, scheduling, and systems engineering (Marczyk 2004). Clearly this shows that the Theory of Evolution yields good fruit, and therefore following Jesus' teachings, the Theory of Evolution itself is good. Why do fundamentalists not obey Jesus and accept the Theory of Evolution?
Has anyone heard of Thomas Recruiting? I have been offered a job from this company to teach ESL in South Korea and cannot seem to find anything on the internet but questions. Here's the follow-up email they sent: Below are the Documents that need to be sent: 1. Criminal Background Check 2. College Degree and 2 Transcripts* 3. 4 "Passport-Sized" Photographs** 4. Resume 5. Self-Health Check Form 6. Copy of Passport 7. Copy of Signed Contract ---------------------------------------- 1. Criminal Background Check and Apostille. (An Apostille is simply a form issued by a state authority that certifies a document is authentic. In this case, the document to be “authenticated” is your background check). First: Go to your local or state police department and obtain the background check document. Second: Have the document authenticated by your state. (This is the Apostille) This is usually done through the Secretary of State’s office in your particular state. We have provided the contact information below. You can call the phone number listed and they should be able to guide you through this process fairly quickly. Once they issue the Apostille document, both it and the actual Background Check should be included in the packet you send. Remember: Be sure to send the Apostille attached to the Background Check! Note: State contacts or links can change but you can always do a Google Search for: “Your State Secretary of State Apostille.” That should find the most current link. 2. Graduating college/university degree, transcripts. Due to some unfortunate occurrences where people have submitted false education documents, Korean schools are very particular about seeing the original of your college degree. Please rest assured, your college degree will be returned to you promptly once you arrive in Korea. We also need 2-copies* 'sealed and stamped' transcripts). It is very important that they be sealed and stamped when we receive them to show they haven't been tampered with. You can order them from your college's registrar office. 3. 4 "Passport-Sized" photos. Just yourself – no “group photos”! These will also be used to verify your work visa. They can be obtained at any local photographer (many WalMart and drug store chains like CVS will do these very inexpensively). Hint: Pictures are very important as this is all the school officials will see prior to meeting you in person. Try not to look too serious or dour. A nice smile and happy expression will say volumes about your personality. Include three photos in the packet of documents and keep one for yourself for later use. 4. A copy of your Resume. 5. A completed Self-Health Check Form. This can obtained here. This is a very simple document to complete. Be honest! http://www.thomasrecruiting.com/documents.html 6. Copy of Passport. A photocopy of your 'identification page' of your passport is all you need here. Make (2) two copies: one to be included in the packet and one for your use later. * If you have not yet received a passport, please modify a Passport Expedition Letter through the link below. Passports can be obtained at most major U.S Post Offices. http://www.thomasrecruiting.com/documents.html 7. Copy of Signed Contract Be sure to include a copy of the signed contract. Make sure you keep a copy for yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have all your documents, please send them together in one package via FedEx and obtain a tracking number to insure security. You will be reimbursed for this expense. Please Email us the tracking number. Address to send package: Thomas Recruiting ATTN: Andrew Room 202, 706-9, Jung Huan Sang Dong, 2 ga, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk 560- 838 South Korea Phone: 010-5548-6672 Kind Regards, Thomas Recruiting http://www.ThomasRecruiting.com If anyone has any information about this company or any advice on this matter it would be greatly appreciated. If not, then information about whether or not these documents can be used to steal my identity or scam me in some other fashion would help. I'm a good guy looking for a decent job out of college and there is seemingly nothing available, so these offers seem more and more tempting as I near graduation. Thank you!
