Creationists, do you atleast acknowledge the benefits that the evolutionary theory has given us?
Some examples... 1) Bioinformatics, a multi-billion-dollar industry, consists largely of the comparison of genetic sequences. Descent with modification is one of its most basic assumptions. 2) Diseases and pests evolve resistance to the drugs and pesticides we use against them. Evolutionary theory is used in the field of resistance management in both medicine and agriculture. 3) Evolutionary theory is used to manage fisheries for greater yields. 4) Artificial selection has been used since prehistory, but it has become much more efficient with the addition of quantitative trait locus mapping. 5) Knowledge of the evolution of parasite virulence in human populations can help guide public health policy. 6) Sex allocation theory, based on evolution theory, was used to predict conditions under which the highly endangered kakapo bird would produce more female offspring, which retrieved it from the brink of extinction. 7) Tracing genes of known function and comparing how they are related to unknown genes helps one to predict unknown gene function, which is foundational for drug discovery. 8) Phylogenetic analysis is a standard part of epidemiology, since it allows the identification of disease reservoirs and sometimes the tracking of step-by-step transmission of disease. For example, phylogenetic analysis confirmed that a Florida dentist was infecting his patients with HIV, that HIV-1 and HIV-2 were transmitted to humans from chimpanzees and mangabey monkeys in the twentieth century, and, when polio was being eradicated from the Americas, that new cases were not coming from hidden reservoirs. 9) Phylogenetic analysis to track the diversity of a pathogen can be used to select an appropriate vaccine for a particular region. 10) Ribotyping is a technique for identifying an organism or at least finding its closest known relative by mapping its ribosomal RNA onto the tree of life. It can be used even when the organisms cannot be cultured or recognized by other methods. Ribotyping and other genotyping methods have been used to find previously unknown infectious agents of human disease. Anti-evolutionary ideas have been around for millennia and have not yet contributed anything with any practical application. Pastor Art~ Without the evolutionary theory, there would be no genetics. It is the framework tying together all of biology. Without the theory of evolution, it would still be possible to know much about biology, but not to understand it. Pastor Art~ Oh, and btw... Hitler was a Christian. Probably even a Creationist. "The undermining of the existence of human culture by the destruction of its bearer seems in the eyes of a folkish philosophy the most execrable crime. Anyone who dares to lay hands on the highest image of the Lord commits sacrilege against the benevolent Creator of this miracle and contributes to the expulsion from paradise." -Adolf Hitler, 1943 "Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord " -Adolf Hitler, 1943 Pastor Art~ Oh, and btw... - i agree with love...you're wasting your time typing this.
- what love said. LOL
- None of the above are based on Evolutionary Theory. Some are based on genetics, which is not the same as Evolutionary Theory. If you want to know what Darwin's theory brought us, it was Hitler, the Nazi party, the holocaust and WW 2.
- I believe that things evolve and adapt to their surroundings, I just happen to believe that God's hand is in it. As the world has changed (which it has many times) creation has had to adapt and evolve and I see this as a "tool" God uses. So yes I can completely acknowledge the benefits that evolutionary theory has given us.
- Science has certainly done a lot for society i'll agree with that. Has what you listed come about because of the theory evolution?? I don't really know lol, but even if the theory of evolution hadn't been around, there's no reason that these other discoveries wouldn't have been made. And in the event that these discoveries were made as an off-shoot of the theory of evolution, doesn't mean that the theory of evolution is in fact correct
- That is a very impressive list. I'll have to save it for later. Trying to explain this stuff to Creationists is pointless though. It'll go right over their heads.
- Yes, evolutionary theory has done great things, this does not mean that it is correct. Notice that the examples are all from the same species and are not the same as the Theory of Evolution which states that all things evolved from a starting point and then spread out and diversified.
- Yes, I do, every day of my God given life. Just remember one thing, be open minded. Science is a tool that we must use to progress humanity, if it did not help us progress, that is when I would wonder why we would still have it. I still don't see why some people think evolution is fact that God does not exist.
- Absolutely, it has! So did Newton's theories and many other's in physics that turned out to not be completely true. But, there is some truth in it and it allowed us to predict things accurately. I am a Christian and I don't care how God created the world. I don't think the creation story is literal, it's a vision and very likely is symbolic of creation. He could very well have used evolution. There is a lot of evidence out there supporting evolution, but there are some giant holes in the theory as well. Ignoring those problems and black-balling the scientists who contest parts of the theory is not the way science is supposed to work. That's the exact thing that religious societies did that left them so blind to science. Recently, there have been many scientists leaning more towards intelligent design and away from evolution. It's a trend that seems to becoming more and more prevalent.
- Good point. I love how some people say nazism was started by evolution as if racism and antisemitic behaviour didn't exist before the time of Darwin. Funny to that Christianity is guilty of this.
- None of these are based on evolution. These are based on genetics, the work of Gregor Mendel...who was a priest. And Watson and Crick for the helix structure of DNA. Blessings of evolution? How about Social Darwinism, used to justify racism, eugenic manipulation to produce a 'pure' race, and the justification of one group dominating another as "natural selection"? How about the MISapplication of genetic theory to screen out insurance applicants for a propensity to a particular disease? And now genetics is a "cottage industry" to help us with genetically modified foods and crops, glow in the dark potatoes, and new strains of virus. Sorry. The problem is placing man and what man can do in the place of a Creator who can give both form and purpose. Evolution (all by itself) is only the manipulation of physical form and the processes that create selective advantage.
- Practical Application I guess you have it all figured out. The rest of the over 5.5 billion people on the planet who believe in some sort of Creationist ( GOD ) we are all idiots and you are our Saviour. Sorry guy to burst your bubble but what you are really refering to is Scientific exploration Labeled as "evolutionary discovery". Charles Darwin himself the theorist behind "evolution" as you are referring to it, renounced his belief in it and professed there to be a creator of the universe. So please explain why this in not a contribution thats practical.
- Dude, no question there are huge benefits to taking an evolutionary approach to biology. But the things you've outlined are all a result of adaptation (today called micro-evolution in an attempt to bolster the evolutionary argument.) We could achieve the exact same results working from the perspective that living things adapt to maximize their survivability. In fact, since you already know that macro-evolution has never been observed, it's completely irrelevant to the discoveries you reference. (Though I completely disagree with your point that bioinformatics is dependent upon descent with modification; it's adaptation, baby!) Don't forget, all of the discoveries you reference can trace their origins back farther than Darwinism back to Gregor Mendel and his pea plants. That's Father Mendel, Catholic priest, as I'm sure you know.
- @ Ruby T: 1) Darwin did not recant. This is an urban legend. 2) Even if he had, it's meaningless. We don't accept evolution out of some sense of Darwin's authority. We accept it due to the overwhelming evidence. 3) He didn't invent the idea of evolution. It was already commonly accepted by his time. He figured out and found the first real evidence for the mechanism of evolution: Natural Selection. @ JBT: Have we directly observed what you call "macroevolution"? No. Did you observe the death of your great, great grandfather? Likely not, but you know he died due to the evidence left behind. It's the same with natural speciation. We've also observed artificial speciation by selectively breeding certain animals and plants to create entirely new species, such as dogs, cattle, carrots... The only difference between artificial speciation and natural speciation is that Instead of being selected by survival in the environment, they were selected by human beings.
- ""Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord " -Adolf Hitler, 1943" Joh 16:3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. EVOLUTION, what a wonderful theory. But sadly it ends with the phrase "dust to dust'. Amen!
- Nazism was heavily influenced by eugenics. There is no way Hitler could call himself a Christian. FACTS on the holocaust are few and far between. The Nazis were funded by American bankers and many Nazi Scientists continued their work for the US after the war. Look at FACTS please. Look at Zionism. The Elite will manipulate any ideology to keep themselves in power. Thats why all ideologies of Babylon should be burnt down, far left or far right positions are used by the elite to maintain their power base.
